What Is a Website Cost Calculator?
A website cost calculator is an online tool that estimates the price of building a new website before you speak to anyone. You answer a short set of questions — what type of site you need, how many pages, which features, whether you need copy and branding — and the tool returns a costed estimate based on real build rates.
Most free website calculators hand you a range so wide it's useless: "your website will cost between R5,000 and R150,000." That's not an estimate, it's a hedge. The calculator above works differently. It's priced off our actual 2026 rate card, itemised line by line, so the number you see is the number we quote from. Submit it and a real person — not a bot — checks the scope and sends you a formal quotation, usually the same working day.
What this calculator does that most free ones don't
- Itemises instead of averaging. You see what each page, feature and add-on contributes, so you can adjust the spec and watch the price move.
- Prices in Rands, at South African rates. No converted US agency averages that bear no relation to what you'll actually be charged here.
- Ends in a real quote. Your estimate goes to a human who checks it. If your project needs something the calculator didn't ask about, we tell you before you commit — not halfway through the build.
- Includes what's normally an upsell. Two custom design concepts, mobile responsiveness, on-page SEO setup and a dedicated project manager are in the base price, not bolted on afterwards.
All figures exclude VAT. VAT is added on the formal quotation.
How to Calculate Website Development Cost (The Manual Method)
If you'd rather work it out by hand — or you want to sanity-check a quote you've already received — this is the same six-step method the calculator above runs.
The formula:
Base build (site type × page count) + Features + Content & copywriting + Brand work + Timeline adjustment = Project total (excl. VAT)
Step 1 — Start with the site type, not the page count
Site type is the single biggest cost driver, and it's the one most people skip. A five-page brochure site and a five-page online store are not remotely the same job. The store needs product templates, a cart, checkout, payment gateway integration, shipping rules, stock handling and order emails — none of which appear on the page count. Decide the type first, then count pages within it.
Step 2 — Count real pages, not menu items
A "page" is a unique layout that has to be designed and built. Twelve service pages built from one template are roughly one design and eleven populations — far cheaper than twelve bespoke layouts. Conversely, one homepage can cost more than five inner pages. Count design work, not URLs.
Step 3 — Price every feature as its own line
Booking systems, member logins, quote baskets, multi-language, course delivery, CRM connections, live shipping rates, custom calculators — each of these is a separate build with its own testing. If a quote lumps them into "development", you cannot tell what you're paying for or what happens if you drop one.
Step 4 — Decide who writes the content
Content is where most website budgets quietly break. Either you supply final, proofread copy and correctly sized images for every page, or the agency writes and sources them — and that is real hours. There is no third option. Sites stall for months at this step more often than at any other.
Step 5 — Add the brand work
A new or refreshed logo, a colour and type system, icon sets, custom photography or illustration. If you already have a proper brand kit, this is close to zero. If you're starting from a logo someone made in Word in 2014, budget for it honestly.
Step 6 — Adjust for the timeline
Compressing a build means displacing other work and paying for overtime. Our rush fee is 50% of the total per week of acceleration — that sounds steep until you price what it costs to pull a team off scheduled projects. If your deadline is soft, don't pay it.
Then add what sits outside the build
Add VAT, and separate your once-off build cost from your ongoing running costs. They're different budgets and mixing them is how people end up surprised in month two. See running costs below.
Key Factors That Change Your Website Price
| Factor | Low end | High end | Why it moves the number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website type | Single landing page | E-commerce or custom system | Determines how much of the site is functionality rather than layout |
| Number of pages | 1–3 | 20+ | More unique layouts to design, build, populate and test |
| Design approach | Adapted template | Custom design from scratch | Bespoke design carries concepting, revisions and sign-off rounds |
| Features | Contact form | Cart, bookings, logins, LMS | Each one is a separate build with its own testing and edge cases |
| Content | You supply it | Fully written and sourced for you | Copywriting and image sourcing are billable hours, not filler |
| Integrations | None | Payment gateway, CRM, accounting, courier API | Third-party systems need configuration, testing and error handling |
| Timeline | Standard schedule | Rushed | Acceleration displaces other scheduled work |
The three questions every good calculator asks
- Content help — do you write the text, or do we?
- Brand work — do you need a logo and identity, or just the website?
- Ongoing support — will you manage the site yourself, or do you want a monthly care plan?
If a calculator doesn't ask you these three things, it isn't pricing your project. It's showing you an average.
Free Website Cost Calculators vs a Real Quote
Every free website cost calculator online has the same three problems, and it's worth knowing them before you trust any number — including ours.
- They're priced on someone else's market. The best-known tools are built by US and European agencies. Their day rates, their overheads, their currency. Converting a dollar estimate to Rands tells you what a website costs there.
- Nobody stands behind the number. A calculator that isn't attached to a studio that will actually build the site has no reason to be accurate. There's no cost to it being wrong.
- They can't see your project. No form catches everything. Legacy content to migrate, an existing system to integrate with, a compliance requirement, a brand guideline document — these change scope and no dropdown will surface them.
So: use a free calculator to get oriented and to build a budget range you can take to a decision-maker. Then get a costed, itemised quote from the people who'll do the work. This calculator is free to use and always will be — but its real job is to make that second conversation faster and more honest, not to replace it.
If you want the wider market picture before you decide, our full breakdown of web design prices in South Africa covers package rates, pricing models and what different types of supplier charge. Building specifically on WordPress? The WordPress website cost estimator is tuned for that.
Using This as a Website Price Checker
Already been quoted by someone else? Run your spec through the calculator above and compare. If the two numbers are within about 20% of each other, the quote is in a normal range. If it's dramatically cheaper, something has been left out — find out what before you sign.
What a proper website quote should show you
- An itemised scope — page count, page names, and every feature listed separately. Not one line saying "website design and development".
- Who supplies the content — stated explicitly, in writing.
- Number of design revision rounds included, and what an extra round costs.
- Ownership — you should own the site, the domain, the hosting account and the licences. Get this in writing.
- What happens after launch — warranty period, what counts as a bug fix versus a change request.
- Running costs, separated — hosting, domain, SSL, plugin licences, maintenance, shown as monthly or annual, not buried in the build total.
- Payment terms — deposit percentage and payment milestones. Ours is a 60% deposit to schedule the build.
- VAT treatment — stated, not assumed.
Red flags in a cheap website quote
- A single line item and a single price with no breakdown
- No mention of who writes the copy
- Hosting or the domain registered in the agency's name, not yours
- "Unlimited pages" — nobody builds unlimited pages for a fixed fee; it means templated pages you populate yourself
- No revision limit stated (this always ends in an argument)
- A price that only makes sense if the site is a stock template with your logo dropped on it
A note on terminology: "website price checker" is also used for tools that estimate what an existing website is worth to buy or sell, based on its traffic and revenue. That's a different job entirely. This page prices the cost of building a website.
Business Website Cost Calculator: Which Type Are You Pricing?
Pick the closest match before you run the calculator — site type sets the base and everything else adjusts from there.
Brochure / business website
Three to nine pages presenting who you are, what you do and how to reach you. The default for professional services, trades, consultancies and most small businesses. Lowest cost, fastest build.
Catalogue website
You display a product or service range in detail but don't take payment online. Enquiries come through instead. Common where pricing is negotiated, stock varies, or the sale needs a conversation.
Catalogue with quote basket
Visitors collect the items they want and submit them as a single enquiry. All the browsing convenience of a store, none of the payment gateway complexity. Strong fit for B2B and trade suppliers.
E-commerce store
Full online selling: product management, cart, checkout, payment gateway, shipping rules, stock levels, order notifications. Costs more up front because the site has to handle money correctly.
Custom systems and platforms
Booking engines, member portals, directories, learning management systems, quoting tools. Priced per project because the functional spec drives the cost, not the page count. If you're pricing training or course delivery, see e-learning and LMS website pricing — the calculator gives you a starting figure but these builds are always scoped in a conversation.

What the Calculator Doesn't Include: Your Running Costs
The estimate above is the once-off cost to build and launch. Every website also has an ongoing cost of ownership, and it's the number most cost calculators leave out entirely. Budget for these separately:
| Running cost | Frequency | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Monthly or annual | The server your site lives on. Cheap shared hosting is a false economy on a business site. |
| Domain registration | Annual | Your .co.za or .com. Must be registered in your name. |
| SSL certificate | Annual | The padlock. Often bundled with hosting. |
| Premium plugin licences | Annual | Forms, SEO, booking, security, backups. Real recurring costs on a WordPress build. |
| Maintenance & updates | Monthly | Core, theme and plugin updates, backups, security monitoring, uptime checks. |
| Content updates | As needed or monthly | New pages, price changes, product additions, seasonal campaigns. |
| Email hosting | Monthly | Separate from website hosting on any serious setup. |
A business site left unmaintained for a year is a security liability, not a saving. Plugin and core updates are the single most common cause of both breakages and breaches — which is why we run maintenance as a managed plan rather than leaving clients to do it themselves. Ask about it when your quote comes through.
Rush Fees
Need it faster than the standard schedule? A rush fee of 50% of the total project cost applies per week of acceleration. It covers displacing scheduled work and the overtime needed to hold quality while compressing the timeline.
Website build projects take 5 to 6 weeks to complete from start (Briefing) to finished (Live product). If you would like to rush the timeline with 1 week the cost of the Rush Fee will be 50% of the total website costs per week rushed. In other words, 2 week rush fee will be 100% of the grand total. Three week rush fee will be 150% of the grand total.
*Rush Fees are 100% payable Pro-Rata
Website Cost Calculator FAQs
Is this website cost calculator free to use?
Yes, completely free, with no signup and no obligation. You only share your details at the end if you want us to turn the estimate into a formal quotation.
How accurate is a website cost calculator?
Ours is accurate to within roughly 10–15% for standard brochure, catalogue and e-commerce builds, because it's priced off our real rate card rather than industry averages. Accuracy drops on custom systems and integrations, where the functional spec matters more than the page count — those always get scoped in a conversation before we commit to a figure.
Does the estimate include hosting and a domain name?
No. The calculator prices the once-off build. Hosting, domain registration, SSL, premium plugin licences and maintenance are ongoing costs and are quoted separately so you can see them clearly.
Can I use the calculator to check a quote I received from another agency?
Yes — that's a good use for it. Enter the same scope you were quoted for and compare. A gap of more than about 20% usually means the two quotes cover different things, not that one supplier is greedy or generous. Find out which items differ.
Does the price include VAT?
No. All figures shown exclude VAT. VAT is added on the formal quotation.
Is the estimate a binding quote?
No. It's an accurate estimate based on what you entered. A person reviews the scope and issues a formal quotation, which is the binding document. If we spot something the calculator couldn't ask about, we raise it before you commit — not mid-build.
Can I calculate the cost of an e-commerce or booking website?
Yes. Choose the matching site type and add the features you need — cart and checkout, payment gateway, bookings, member logins, course delivery. Complex custom platforms will give you a realistic starting figure that we refine in a scoping call.
What deposit is required to start?
A 60% deposit secures your slot in the build schedule. The balance is due at the agreed milestone before handover.
How long does it take to build the website I just priced?
Timelines depend on scope and, more than anything, on how quickly content and feedback come back from your side. Your formal quotation includes a schedule. If you need it sooner, the rush fee above applies.
What's the difference between a website cost calculator and a website price checker?
A website cost calculator estimates what it will cost to build a new website. A website price checker or valuation tool estimates what an existing website is worth to buy or sell, based on its traffic and revenue. This page does the first one.
Got Your Number? Let's Make It Real
Submit your estimate above and a real person will check the scope and send you a formal, itemised quotation — usually the same working day. No sales sequence, no chatbot, no pressure. If the scope needs a conversation first, we'll say so.
